Dracula's Guest by Bram Stoker
5.0

Originally a chapter of Dracula that Stoker edited out, "Dracula's Guest" was later published separately as a short story. I can see why Stoker wanted to get to the meat of his novel more quickly, but this is a great prologue that I wish more editions of Dracula included. It's atmospheric and creepy and mysterious and raises all the right questions about what Jonathan Harker is doing in Eastern Europe and what Dracula has planned for him.

I'd love it more if Harker wasn't such a dolt in it. Dismissing local folklore is one thing, but wandering off alone into the wilderness as nightfall and a snowstorm are coming - especially when there are audible wolves in the area - seems the height of foolishness.
