Girl in White Cotton by Avni Doshi

3.0

Avni Doshi's Girl in White Cotton delves into a fraught mother-daughter relationship, exposing generational trauma and unspoken resentment. The story follows Antara, who cares for her mother, Tara, as she battles dementia.

Despite her duty, Antara harbours deep bitterness, mirroring the emotional neglect she experienced growing up. Both characters are deeply flawed, self-centred, and unable to break free from their toxic dynamic.

While the writing is compelling, the negativity and lack of resolution make it a heavy read. Antara’s questionable choices, especially regarding her daughter, and the disappointing ending left me conflicted.

However, the novel’s raw portrayal of fractured minds and the harsh realities of human relationships cannot be overlooked. This dark exploration isn’t for everyone, but for those intrigued by complex family dynamics, it might resonate.
