A Night in the Lonesome October is an entirely delightful book that I would highly recommend to any reader for this special month particularly (although I'm sure it's good any time of the year). Told through the POV of good watchdog Snuff, it called to mind very much the narrative voice of Harold in the Bunnicula series. Only in this case, Toby Monroe grew up to become a knife wielding man stalking the streets of London collecting grisly ingredients in the furtherance of a deadly game where half of the players are trying to summon the Elder Gods (yes, those Elder Gods) and the other half are trying to prevent this from happening.

There are a lot of characters, human and animal and...not-so-human-or-animal. I listened to this on audio because it was available to me through hoopla, and the narrator Matt Godfrey did an amazing job with the wide array of voices assigned to each "player," but I do wish I had read it traditionally instead to immerse myself even further in this charming world.

One negative is that I could have done without the scene in the vivisection laboratory. But otherwise, I was smiling throughout.
