I really enjoyed this book and it’s theme of caring for our world (protected owls) and each other through friendship. However, there were a few changes I think could have been made to keep the theme of the story and make it more in line with my values. First, there are a few instances of “damn” and “ass” that I find unnecessary in children’s books. Second, while I applaud Roy helping his friend when she needs a place to stay, I think it could have been written with one of the kids staying on the couch in the family room rather than a middle school boy and girl staying in the same bedroom (bed and floor respectively, but still). Finally, I think it’s important to note that there are serious themes that parents might want to discuss with readers including miscarriage, truancy, and a broken family home.
