Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi

5.0

This book was totally unique and beautifully written. I felt like it had a complex simplicity (yes I know that’s an oxymoron...). It was a quick read, I found myself drawn in immediately and I wanted to keep reading. It consists of 4 parts which weave together with subtle connections between characters. This is a Japanese book in translation, which is evident as you read, yet I felt that this element added to the beauty of the book and the lyrical nature of the story! When I first heard about the premise of this book I was desperate to get my hands on it, and I’m thrilled that it lived up to my expectations. I don’t think it was life changing or earth shattering, however it was a fully enjoyable read that was so well rounded. As much as it was a time travel story itself, it was also a successfully executed exposition on time travel stories and it’s always appreciated when time travel stories follow “the rules”.
