This is a YA contemporary story about a boy named Luc. Luc was always sick. His heart has always had problems. But now his heart really hates him. Luc needs another heart transplant. However, this time Luc isn't gonna take it; he's sick of hospitals and medicine. Instead he decides to take a road trip with his best friend Evelyn, to Oregon where he can die with dignity. However, Evelyn isn't gonna let Luc go that easily.
I really enjoyed this book. I thought the writing was beautiful and the story was very heart-warming and heart braking at the same time. What I thought this book did really well was finding a balance between sad and uplifting. It there were times when I was sobbing, but then there were times when I couldn't stop smiling.
I think the authors did a really good job of making the story feel real. We got to see the characters go through ups and downs, they felt like real humans. I really appreciated that.
My favorite character was Evelyn. I loved seeing her grow from a person who let people walk all over her to a person who let people know what she needed. I liked how level-headed and sensible she was. I think one of the reasons I related to her was because she was also home schooled. And the relationship she had with her mother hit very close to home.
The one thing I had a problem with was how long Luc kept his illness from Evelyn. That has to be one of my biggest book pet-peeves. It felt really selfish of him to let her remain in the dark for so long. Given the fact that he could have dropped on Evelyn at any moment was just something that irked me. It was just like, come on dude, you could have let her know.
One thing I will say is watch out for the ending. It will really make you feel some feels.
