This book really surprised me, and it’s my first 5-star read of the year. Set in the (probably) near future, Annie is a robot designed to pleasure her owner, Doug. She’s set to “autodidactic” mode though, which means she can think & feel *almost* like a human. The story is fast-paced and the perfect length—Annie explores her identity, learns who she is with Doug, and wonders who she could become without him. I found myself really rooting for Annie (and absolutely hating Doug), despite her robot status. I thought the commentary on what it means to be human was insightful & the entire premise of the story was creative and only a little bit scary—robots walking around essentially cosplaying as humans? Weird, but cool.
