The Tortilla Curtain by T.C. Boyle, T.C. Boyle
2.0

This novel is heavy on metaphor, but the problem is that most of the metaphor is inflicted on a poor immigrant couple to the point where the book descends into the realm of torture porn. The only character who is portrayed in a positive light is America, and that’s because she represents . . . America. Get it? *eyeroll*. Even her husband Cándido is pictured as a drunk abuser who considers murder-suicide when his luck continues to spiral down the drain.

I have no plans to read American Dirt, but I have a feeling the mood is probably the same.
