Leah on the Offbeat
by Becky Albertalli
*3.5 rounded up
My feelings fluctuated a lot while reading this. At first introduction of Leah, I kind of didn't like her perspective. It made me put the book down for almost month, until I realized Scribd had the audiobook (which I loved btw! The narrator was perfect.)
I eventually warmed up to Leah, but the problem is that other than her mom and Simon of course, I never ended up falling in love with the other characters, ESPECIALLY the love interest.
And that brings us to my main issue. The love interest. No spoilers, but I never bought it. Even in the climactic scene, I was still like... meh?
I liked the story (even if it was a little.... flat at times), and I enjoyed reading the character dynamics, but it felt like nothing was truly fleshed out. Not the mother-daughter relationship, the romantic relationship, the friendship disagreements, etc. And the whole drummer-in-a-band thing just slipped in and out of the story and every time it was brought back up I was like.... oh yeah, that.
This is sounding pretty negative, but I did enjoy it! I just think it was a little... under-cooked. Ya know?
