Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë

3.0

What did I just read.

**TW**
Toxic relationships, ab*sue (mental and physical), illness, death, m*rder (thoughts included), obsession, neglect (child and adult)
If at all a sensitive reader, I do not advise the reading of this book.

1801, the year the book begins. We relive the events of Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange and the lives of their tenants. One man in particular, Heathcliff, soon becomes the main focus of the novel. The frame narrative becomes clear to us as we continue reading and learn the tale through (mostly) word-of-mouth.
One thing that put me off was the continous repetition of previous events. I understand that, yes, life could have been this way around the time it was based, but surely it wasn't this way for everyone.
Emily Brontë did a wonderful job of writing the story and her style of writing was quite effective but the story was certainly wild.

One of the narrators, Nelly, did slightly annoy me in the way she told her tale. She was a servant yet she narrated herself as someone who had a higher social class than she did. Yes, she still let us know that she was a servant, but she apparently spoke very 'boldly' to her masters and that did not seem at all believable for the time period this book is said to be set in.

Heathcliff can only be described as an obsessive male who believes only his way is the right way. Everything HAS to go his way otherwise he gets upset and throws a 'fit'. If things didn't go his way he turned into this mad-man who sought only for revenge.

Catherine is another wild spirit who was spoilt rotten and believed she could get anything she wanted. If she didn't get it, she made sure to manipulate those around her to get exactly what she wanted.

There were so many problems between these two house that my rant would go on forever.
Yes, this book is greatly written and puts things into perspective but it does not capture me, as a reader.

That being said, I will not recommend this book but only say that if you wish to read it, know that it is not your ordinary read and it is certainly NOT a beautiful romance story.
