These Toxic Things by Rachel Howzell Hall

5.0

Read this book!

Pay no attention to the reviews that note they're "uncomfortable" with the n word (it appears twice, once as an insult hurled by whites) or that there's too much stereotyping. This is a book with a brave and broken Black heroine by a Black woman. If it didn't get uncomfortable, it wouldn't feel real.

Yes, you can have a slow-burning thriller, and this is one. The physiological terror feels real, and while you might guess at the culprit, you're unlikely to be able to tie all the pieces together. The added social commentary about the invisibility of women adds rather than detracts.

We need more crime authors like Rachel!
