I’ll be honest, the beginning was hard to get through. Something about Easton’s tone was unappealing and, I would go so far, slightly revolting. But, as I made my way further through, I started to sympathize with ka. Then the book started to pick up. The dread that was hinted at made a home in my bones and I was unable to put the book down until it was resolved.
I do wish the ending was paced better. It seemed odd that that was it. All that torment to be so quickly fixed. I wished to see more of Roderick’s undoing after Madeline’s “death.”
Overall, a tense and riveting read that fills a good sense of dread, though an ending all too quick.
