Magic's Pawn
by Mercedes Lackey
This book was not fun to read. Going in I thought it would be your average, (maybe a little cheesy here and there) fantasy adventure type plot with gay romance subplot (which I was looking forward to). Not terrible but not great, just average...except it was terrible. I like the themes it had; Anti toxic masculinity, anti violence, and finding a purpose. Non of those themes however were executed well or even entertainingly. The beginning takes way too long to set up the main character then the book just quickly spoon feeds the rest of the characters to you. The romance subplot is speed through so much that it just ended up feeling forced and unrealistic. There is way too much filler that could have been easily replaced with building on characters relationships, or building the fantasy world more. Instead the book is just filled with fan fiction type nonsense that goes no where and does nothing for the rest of the story. Then drawn out, boring, melodramatic scenes in between. If your looking for a gay fantasy read don’t read this one, just keep looking.
