One to Watch
by Kate Stayman-London
This one came across my desk, and the blurb reminded me of [b:The Summer of Jordi Perez|31246717|The Summer of Jordi Perez (and the Best Burger in Los Angeles)|Amy Spalding|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1523305710l/31246717._SX50_.jpg|51900047] which also features a fashion interested plus-sized MC. Seeing as I really enjoyed that book, I was totally down for a new story with fashion sprinkled plot and this book did not disappoint in that regard.
Bea criticizesThe Bachelor(ette)Main Squeeze for their lack of diversity (body, race, sexuality etc.) and finds herself the lead in the next season. 25 men competing for Bea, lovely resorts, lots of introspection and reflection about insecurities and desires ensue. And kissing, don't forget the kissing.
I really like Bea, and I really liked the book, though at some points stories hit a little close to home, which is totally not helped with me and Bea having the same name. I also enjoyed the "behind-the-scenes" look to how a program like this is run. I have never watched more than about two episodes of the franchise, but totally enjoyed this.
As some other reviewers pointed out though, the cast diversity is presented early in the book and then completely forgotten about. I feel like it's a bit of "pick some stereotypes and then color them in at the end".
Overall, I had great fun reading it, if you enjoy the show you'll likely enjoy parts of it more than me. Would love to see it on a screen some day.
