War and Remembrance
by Herman Wouk
It was so, so good. Maybe a little melodramatic, but not to the point where you can't get emotionally invested. It was a bit of a struggle not to race through it--I enjoyed all of it and didn't exactly want to skip anything, but I was in agony about what happened to Natalie and Louis and had to know how things would end for them. I borrowed this ebook from the library, and it was returned before I could finish. I could have waited two weeks to get the copy back, but I ended up just buying the kindle version for myself because I love this book and I didn't want to wait that long.
There are a lot of books that are really difficult for me to read because bad things happen to children, and it's just a little too much for me at this point in my life. Really bad things happen to children in this book, but I read it anyway because it was so good. (But I may have snuck into my sons' room a few times after they were asleep because I had read something sad and I needed to reassure myself that they were safe and cozy and home.)
My teeny tiny quibble is that the ending seemed a bit anticlimactic? It felt like at some point we turned a corner and weren't going to really get many more satisfying details.
