It’s complicated. I expected a romance the likes of P&P. This is NOT that. It’s a story of toxic, tumultuous, selfish, vindictive love. It’s told through the voice of two narrators, both of whom are of questionable character themselves, which is possibly the most interesting aspect of this book!
It took some getting used to the language of this book, and one or two characters had dialects that were really difficult to read. For those reasons, I might recommend an audiobook version.
At face value, the story itself was dark and difficult to stick with. The characters are not like-able either. But the writing is wonderful, it’s incredibly unique, and it was very racy for its time. I look forward to reading some analyses of it for even more understanding and cultural context.
