The Divine Comedy
by Dante Alighieri
This is one you read because you should not because it's fun. That said, there are unending interesting moments in Dante's epic poem. "Inferno" is, of course, the darkest. It's interesting to see where Dante puts his enemies. "Purgatorio" is my favorite; it has the most interesting combination of hope and despair. "Paradiso" is dull at times, but the end is glorious. My version includes Dore's illustrations; they helped.
