bibliolucinda 's review for:
Hurricane Season
by Fernanda Melchor
"That’s what the women in town say: there is no treasure in there, no gold or silver or diamonds or anything more than a searing pain that refuses to go away."
A heaviness sits in your chest when you read this book - in all its uncomfortable and stomach-churning content, Melchor's writing is almost impossible to look away from. I wasn't expecting it to be so graphic, and there was one particular chapter that frankly, had me feeling sick. There's a frenetic, wild quality to this writing, imbued with urgent precision and such detail that it felt overwhelming at times. For a story so steeped in misery and disturbing brutality, it's a riveting book with brilliant structure and pacing, and it has me so intrigued and eager for more of Melchor's work to be translated. 4.5 stars rounded up!
