I like to pick a short non-fiction read to play during my Friday workday, and this week’s was “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me.” This is the third such celebrity memoir I’ve read like this recently (Amy Poehler’s and Tina Fey’s books were the others), and I liked this one least of the three. But! I don’t think that’s the fault of Mindy or a reflection of the quality of the book. It’s simply that Mindy was a lot younger when she wrote this than the other two when they wrote their books, so there was a little less “memoir/life lesson/career trajectory” meat to it in proportion to the whimsy and comedy writing. My personal preference is for more of the latter, so I liked the other two more, but I didn’t NOT enjoy this. Mindy is really fun person to spend 5 hours on audio with, and it’s fun to read this from a time when she was still earlier in her career seeing all that she’s done now. I’ll definitely consider reading her second book, as I bet it’ll have more of what I like out of books like these.
