Hellblazer, Vol. 9: Critical Mass by Eddie Campbell, Paul Jenkins, Jamie Delano
4.0

Jamie Delano, the man who started Hellblazer, is brought back to get the series back on its feet. Then, Eddie Campbell tries to do "Damnation's Flame" from [b:Hellblazer, Vol. 8: Rake at the Gates of Hell|18490859|Hellblazer, Vol. 8 Rake at the Gates of Hell (Hellblazer New Edition, #8)|Garth Ennis|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1397911798s/18490859.jpg|42865207] with limited success. Finally, Paul Jenkins begins his run. Most of this volume is drawn by Sean Phillips with a nice fill in art by Pat McEown for issue 94. Their work is phenomenal as the art and coloring set the tone well for the dark and disturbed world in which Constantine resides.

#84 In Another Part of Hell 3.5/5
Jamie Delano, the man who began the series, steps in to expand on Constantine's past. Constantine reflects on his time in Chas' house and how it has changed from when Chas' mom and her familiar reigned. This is definitely a dark story, and it has its share of messed up moments. However, it contains true Constantine trickery and re-grounds the series in established lore.

#85-88 Warped Notions 2/5
Eddie Campbell delivers a weird globe hopping dream-esque tale that plays fast and loose with logic. It works better than "Damnation's Flame," but only because it has actual stakes... I think. It is pretty forgettable, and if you want to skip to the next story, all you need to know is that Constantine is in Australia.

#89-90 Dreamtime and Dangerous Ground 3/5
Paul Jenkins begins his run by spending this arc tying up Eddie Campbell's story. Constantine attempts to help his friend Jeffo, an aborigine, fend off a group that wants their land. It manages to avoid the white man saving the natives trope, but just barely. It is an enjoyable little romp in the Australian Outback.

#91 Riding the Green Lanes 3.5/5
Jenkins introduces a group of friends from Constantine's pre-magic days who will follow him though the next set of adventures. The story is a fine Hellblazer one-off that feels like something from the first few volumes, and I mean that in the best way possible.

#92-96 Critical Mass 4/5
Jenkins puts a far better cap on Ennis' run than he did while setting the stage for the next set of clashes with the First of the Fallen. The First has a plan to get back at Constantine and into Hell. While the method is what some might call predictable, the consequences are both immediate and provide great story potential for the remainder of Jenkins' run.

This starts Paul Jenkins 36 issue run, and I am definitely looking forward to the next volume.
