I enjoyed this book, but...

The execution was hugely problematic. The narrative got away from the compelling central mystery and wandered too much. This was unfortunate, because I very much wanted the book to fully develop the mystery aspect as that was my favorite part. Sadly, it did not.

Spoiler-y, so read beyond the tag at your own risk.
SpoilerAlso, I was extremely annoyed by how credulous Miles is. I mean, he's very, very stupid when it comes to his sister. Her sudden and inevitable betrayal (hahahaha!) surprised me not one iota, however much it surprised him. Instead, I was scratching my head and wondering why anyone in their right mind would wander back into the belly of the beast after going to great lengths to escape it.

I still want to read the next installment, though. I'm interested to see where the series goes from here.
