The Möbius Book by Catherine Lacey
4.75

Through its form (and to an extent its subject matter), an exploration of the writing process, of fiction, and of literature.

I read the non-fiction part first, which I found particularly insightful and striking - employing quotations and academic references sparingly but powerfully, and relying instead primarily on the author's language, clarity, and insight. The fictional section was particularly interesting to read having already read the autobiographical section, in that one could deduce/theorize about certain creative choices that were made.

Themes are connected skilfully in a way that does not feel contrived but is instead experiential and visual, symbolic and real.

I don't think this is a perfect book and in particular the fiction section felt a bit meagre, which is not to say there's no art in it. However, I think in this case the 5 star rating - rather than putting it on the exact same level as some of my other 5 star ratings and as the most accomplished literature out there - is meant to signify just how much value I think there is to this book, just how much it says and can say in particular people's lives and relationships, just how much it explores and just how precisely it does so. This is the type of book I want to ask people to read. Due to its ease in weaving together various themes, I think it will serve many people, myself included, in non-obvious ways and will allow for many conversations.
