Happening by Annie Ernaux
5.0
In an election year where all rights seem to be up for grabs, and two years following the overturning of Roe v. Wade, I somehow didn't think I would be as affected by this Ernaux work as I am.
Ernaux's writing is stark and beautiful. I love the freedom she recognizes while she is exploring and challenging her memories and thoughts on the page.
Her joy (and really any outside emotion) of the time is portrayed in this grey filter while the panic and fear is written in a similar tone but manages to come off the page in color.
It feels silly to rank memories with stars, but this work has become a top favorite of mine.
