The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen

5.0

This is a beautifully illustrated graphic novel following Tiến’s coming of age and self-discovery, alongside woven in fantasy tales and his mother’s experience immigrating to the US. Tiến struggles with the English to Vietnamese language barrier he has with his parents and wrestles with how he will tell his parents that he’s gay. Through literature and through stories, Tiến is able to find the courage--and language--needed to become his authentic self. I really enjoyed this graphic and it’s easily moving to the top of my favorites.
