The Safekeep by Yael van der Wouden
4.5
emotional mysterious medium-paced

Read as longlisted (then shortlisted and ultimately won 🏆) the women's prize for fiction 2025. This didn't dissapoint! The blurb was fabulous and really hooked me in, and looking back over the reading experience, didn't spoil any of the key plot points and was reflective of the novel, which is refreshing.
The language and writing style transported me to the Netherlands in the 1960s. I loved how the author made the main character/narrator unlikeable, so you go along with her journey of discovery in identity and growth. Although the chapters were large, I found it very digestable.
I enjoyed how the plot develops and moves with moments where you reflect as a reader on topics the book touches on.
Fantastic read, do pick it up!  Excited for future novels from the author.
