The Spymistress by Jennifer Chiaverini
3.0
I enjoyed this book, there was enough suspense to keep you interested despite obviously knowing how the war will end already. I wish the author had touched on the food shortages and such a bit more. We knew of the suffering in the prisons but because so little was said about the shortages for the Van Lew family or their friends you had the impression that they were basically just as they had been except for the loss of money used for the cause.
Naively, I thought we would see a happy ending when the war ended and that the people around Lizzie would see how she had been right all along. I'm not sure why I thought that vs the reality of them going from hating her and her beliefs to actually despising her for learning that she may have been directly responsible in part of their loss of the war and thus their loved ones. I think it would actually be equally difficult to live in the aftermath as it was to live through the war.
I hadn't realized that the people within in the book are actual historical figures. I knew it was based on a true story but hadn't realized how much of it. I might use this as a jumping off point to learn more about Lizzie and Mary Jane and those around them.
