This book had a fairy tale start that ended with deep feelings.

To me this book shifted in tone drastically from the start to finish. The start is very whimsical and felt like I stepped into a Disney story of princesses and princes. It starts full of magic and opportunities for greatness and good things. The contrast then was huge when the party started traveling towards the Onyx Spire. This happens gradually though. The start of the journey starts with a lot of laughter which slowly happens less and less. I absolutely loved that the book did this and made me enjoy it even more.

There are big connections being made between new friends and lovers in this book and I loved the way this played out. There is the obvious relationship between Sol and the princess he meets at the start of the book.  Their interactions are full of love and care and I enjoyed those greatly. I got invested in them fast which ended in a lot of easy tears for this book (don't worry, I love crying for books).
During the travels Sol also gets closer with his companions and I loved the banter between them. They look out for each other and give a helping hand when needed. The area's they are in are absolutely dark and any kindness to be found with each other was deeply treasured.
I also loved the small romance subplot that I won't tell more about because of spoilers, but it was good that I'll say.

Concluding I really enjoyed this book and it makes me want to read more from this author.

I received an eARC and this was my honest review.
