Love that this book gives space for our main character, Bree, to be messy and emotional. So often girls are expected to be neat and perfect in their grief and Bree is exactly as imperfect as a teenage girl should be when processing the death of her mother.
The tension of being a young Black girl at a PWI in North Carolina is palpable and so grounded. I’m really glad that Deonn did not shy away from exploring the racism and micro aggressions Black people face every day but also managed to do it in such a way that it felt natural to the story rather than forced in to make a point.
A wonderful and exciting young adult fantasy that gives us exactly what’s expected of the genre in the best possible way.
