The Pickwick Papers
by Charles Dickens
An absolute shambles of a book. Rambling, disjointed, digressive, and chock-full of absurdity... what was he thinking.
4* instead of 5* because truth be told the first third is a bit dire whilst he finds his feet. But after the introduction of the mighty Sam Weller, and beyond that to the great Bardell v. Pickwick trial and the subsequent episodes in The Fleet (the highlight IMHO) you start to see the great man in his stride. Just don't start with this as your intro into the world of Dickens.
