We Used To Be Friends
by Amy Spalding
I had a lot of expectations going into this story and it's possibly what set me up for disappointment. We Used to be Friends follows Kat and James throughout their senior year and how they go from being inseparable to basically strangers.
What I really appreciated about this book was that it was about a friendship breakup and it portrays it rather well. Each character going through their own unique situation and how they perceive what is taking place shows how their decade long friendship slowly unravels. How even the best of friends can question their friendship in the first place. Kat and James are no exception, and it seems like no matter what either girl tries to do to fix their friendship, it only makes things worse. The major miscommunication throughout the year will lead the girls to finally blowing up on one another and making it impossible to ever going back to how things were before.
I feel this story could have come across much better if James and Kat told the story from the same timeline. The book became rather confusing at points with Kat's POV starting at the beginning of senior year to summertime and James' POV starting from going off to college back through to the beginning of senior year. It became rather difficult keeping track of what had happened to who and even at points of whose POV you were reading. It was a major disconnect and it didn't add value to the story.
Overall, I'm glad I read this book and could resonate with it, as I have went through several friend breakups myself, small and major. It's never easy to go through a friend breakup and it's nice to see a story that you can relate to and be like they get it. That even though the friendship may be over or nothing in comparison to what it used to be you're still grateful for all the memories throughout and the lessons it taught you along the way. We Used to be Friends truly is that bittersweet ending where you realize your friendship with that person is never going to be the same, and that's okay.
