Dandadan, Vol. 1
by Yukinobu Tatsu
I have a much greater appreciation for this volume after reading the rest of the series and becoming a genuine fan. I still don’t like Momo nearly getting assaulted in the first chapter, even it makes sense with alien abduction tropes and is played for horror. It’s a challenging first foot forward. But the writing is so strong otherwise! It’s very goofy and crude, but very well thought out. Turbo Granny stealing shlongs is absurd, but it’s motivated by the harsh reality of her trying to protect, or take revenge for, the spirits of young women who have been assaulted. The series definitely gets better at blending tragedy with absurdism, but this volume is a much stronger start to the series than I first gave it credit for.
