A Pho Love Story by Loan Le

4.0

I think what I liked most about this novel was the use of the Vietnamese language as well as the amazing descriptions of food interspersed throughout the story. Reading the authors note it was interesting to learn their personal history about food and the language they use with their parents. I appreciated that the author gave voice to her authentic experience and although I do not share the same culture, this book gave me a perspective on one aspect of Asian American life that I otherwise have not encountered.

Throughout the book the main characters each share their perspectives with a small overlap in the timeline when each segment switches from one to the other. I really appreciated this linkage in the writing and I don’t think I’ve seen it in another book. For me, this was the ideal way to read multiple perspectives. I never felt lost or confused when the perspective changed from chapter to chapter which can happen with so many books written in this style.

Overall this was a heartwarming enemies to friends story that gave me all the good feels. It’s a great YA book and an easy summertime read.
