Go the Distance by Jen Calonita

I should start by saying that Hercules is one of my favorite Disney movies, so maybe I was a bit more biased in my opinions than usual; but overall, this felt like a very mediocre read.

I loved that Meg got to have her own spotlight because it’s something she rightfully deserves. I loved that we got character cameos throughout the story, and that we were able to meet a few more gods.

What I didn’t love was that many of the characters seemed very two-dimensional (pun not intended) and seemed to have lost a lot of their personality and/or character development. Phil kept repeating the same motions and lost a lot of his quick wit, Hades just seemed to recycle through the same three nicknames that he had for Meg in the movie, and Meg went through a regression and had to overcome much of the same trauma that she did already in the movie. And even though it was her story, she still had to depend on other people to save her on multiple occasions.

It was a decent read that had a lot of amazing callbacks to the movie, but all in all, I think it was a bit lacking in finding its place as an individual story that continued where the film left off.
