It's fun, weird, and whimsical, and the stakes are high. But the characterization is pretty uneven, as is the control over the narrative. It feels like this book is trying really, really hard to be the next Gormenghast + Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. Maybe too hard. Not sure I'll read the next book or not.
