Breathtaking: Inside the NHS in a Time of Pandemic by Rachel Clarke
4.0
Humbling and anger-inducing in equal measure. Humbling because of the insight into the heroism and dedication of NHS staff throughout the early days of this pandemic (the book covers the first half or 2020). Anger-inducing because even though Clarke largely avoids polemic, it is impossible for her not to juxtapose the selflessness of NHS staff with the botched response, inadequate support, and constant spin of the UK government. An important missive from the front line, particularly now in early 2021 as the politicians attempt to appropriate the success of the NHS vaccine rollout in an attempt to erase the memory of a year of belated action and one of the highest death tolls in the western world. Oh, and the 'Covid Recovery Group' should be beaten senseless with hardback copies (well - they would never actually read it).
