I came into this book dreading it* because I have never liked the movies. In fact, I hate them.

Probably has something to do with the fact that my family's response was always, "He deserved it," when I would get upset by the fact that, in one of the movies, the family has their own brother killed. That will make you wonder. It was some relief that this does not occur in the book.

That said, the book I didn't completely hate, although there were certainly parts, like the Johnny and Lucy storyline(s), that I did not care for at all. (What was the point of any of that?)

*Why read it then, right? Because it's on The BBC's Big Read list which I'm working through. Stubbornly.
