This is Jon Krakauer's collection of essays from his mountaineering adventures, including the Eiger North Wall in the Alps, Denali in Alaska, and K2 in the Karakoram.  He writes very compellingly of the dangers of the mountains, including frostbite, crevasses, avalanches, etc.
