Hello, Universe by Erin Entrada Kelly

Listened to this story with my daughter. Appreciated how the author tied diversity within the story line. Characters were different races/ethnicities and some with learning disabilities. Virgil is called “turtle” by his family. He’s bullied at school by one nasty boy in particular. He’s interested in becoming friends with Valencia, the deaf girl in his special needs class. Virgil has a lot going on and so does Valencia Somerset. Valencia’s being deaf is highlighted throughout this book. Despite this disability she comes across wanting to be independent and is a very strong young lady. Good story about friendship and growth in life. Would have liked a less abrupt ending but otherwise enjoyable read.
