The Beijing Family by Gina Tang

informative medium-paced

3.0

3.5/5 from me. I got this book from booktaster on X.

This book gave us a lot of information on China's communism era and what went down in America (in Kara's present time). It's a great read for someone wanting to boost their international know-how. The story goes at a medium pace, maybe because it talks about a moment before Kara's present. Bonus point, this story is funny enough and warm when it gets into the family bonding stuff.

Though, I constantly felt so sleepy while reading this book. It's not because it's a boring book, no. It's because the book has a lot of information dump. It's not packed with enough narrative, so we don't really get into it with the characters and feel what they feel. The main point of this book kind of gives us information or TELL us what happened in real China.

Maybe I can rephrase it like this: this whole book's storytelling style is 'telling,' not 'showing.'

Not bad. We still learn so many things from here. But, it made me sleepy. That's it.
