I personally love a book with a dark plot and definitely enjoy drama but this book has way too much of it. There is nothing happy in this book, or any of the others in the series for that matter. Every character ends up miserable or dead and it makes the plot completely predictable. Whenever there is a tiny hint of happiness, I know something terrible will follow, for example Tobey's last conversation with Rebecca where they agree to be good friends but immediately after Rebecca is stabbed and killed. Another example is Tobey finally getting together with Callie - it was obvious something terrible would happen. Checkmate was my favourite book in the series mostly because of the complexity of Callie and the pure hatred of Jude. I hate how Callie was written in the book, because she wasn't in it at all. This book was an unnecessary addition to the series and depicted Tobey as a completely different character to what he was before.
