The War of the Worlds
by H.G. Wells
Dang, I really appreciate this book for what it is, however the writing from this time period is always soooo dryyyy to me. This book was written back in 1897 and is one of the first sci-fi books to write about an alien invasion (also the first time the word “heat ray” was ever used). I loved the aesthetic of it—England in the late 1800’s, pine forests, cobblestone roads, leathery and slick martians coming to disturb it all by charring humans and setting fire to the forests and towns—and I always enjoy a book that shows human nature when it’s strained during catastrophe. The scariest part of the world ending can sometimes be the people you run into—there were definitely several freaky scenarios in this story.
Because I love sci-fi so much I have a respect for this book—it is a pillar. However, the writing was dry and redundant in many areas. After the 12th description of a random English town that I did not give a flip about, I was ready for the book to wrap up.
Glad to experience it though. I would have liked to read more about the characters and their thoughts and feelings as opposed to facts after facts after facts and descriptions.
