The Dazzling Heights
by Katharine McGee
Honestly. It took me forever to get into this book. I was thoroughly intrigued by the first one. And I loved how the perspective shifted each chapter. But this one - it felt like so much time should be passing and it wasn’t. There was all this build up and nothing was happening. And it’s as though there was one major storyline and a major plot point you were waiting to arrive at and then for like, 3 chapters, you’re like here we go! And then it’s over. And Avery and Atlas. I just can’t. The teen angst and melodrama was more than I could take in one book. And then I love Watt and I appreciated Leda actually having a change of tempo once he really became a staple in her life. Realizing she could have more, and therefore be more. But honestly, the teacher kissing Rylin? Like, barely even a climax. Hardly a side plot. And then all of a sudden - enter the embittered girlfriend of dead Eris- and then she’s gone. Like, ohhhh. You thought you knew the plot of book 3 but psych - you don’t! Sorry - that doesn’t pass for a cliffhanger. That’s just lazy. Also, don’t even get me started on the random dream Eris who comes to give Avery sound advice from the beyond?!!What even is that. And we all know Calliope and Avery are going to have their moment but I am so tired of the “woe is me I’m so rich and no one understands my depth of emotion” but literally all she stresses over is Atlas - that I can’t even be mad at the boring and very predictable Calliope I could’ve done without adding to the mix.
Just no. I’ll read the third because I’m no quitter but. I almost tapped out with this one.
