The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty

4.0

Obviously I was going to like this since The Exorcist is one of my all-time fave horror movies. So it shouldn't be super surprising that I enjoyed the movie more than the book in this case! Not to do a full review exclusively comparing this to the movie but also that's what I'm going to do.

The pacing is way better in the movie, it felt like there was so much more set up and background here before we got to the good scary stuff that I knew was coming. Which isn't inherently a bad thing, but like I said... I knew what was coming so I was excited lol. The whole thing had a great creepy undertone that the movie captured so well. As a whole, the movie is a fantastic adaptation of this as a source material. I think this is a story that just translates really well to screen and resonates more (for me) as a film because a lot of the horror is so visual. That being said, there definitely were moments in here that are genuinely scary. I had a few parts where I was like all excited to be reading The Exorcist and then stopped and realized wait... this is scary....

Overall really fun and glad I finally read the original behind one of my faves. And a perfect start to the official spooky season. Definitely not something everyone will enjoy but worth checking out if you like the movie!
