The intrigue ramps up in this second instalment. Opening with the siege of Durham and the Battle of Neville's Cross, the adventure takes us from Northern England to Normandy.
The protagonist, Thomas, goes through some pretty unfortunate things in this book and the story seems altogether a bit darker in a way that reminded me of the best moments of C.J. Sansom's Shardlake series.
The first part is dedicated almost entirely to Bernard Cornwell's excellent writing of battles, and in the aftermath the story pivots back to Thomas's quest for the Holy Grail; revelations about which set up the third and final book of the trilogy.
