Reverie by Ryan La Sala
1.0

I was genuinely really sad to rate this so low because I wanted to like it so much! But the only positives I can really give this book is that the structure of the actual Reveries are fairly cool, and the writing is competent. I appreciated the LGBT+ rep but that's not brownie points when doing so is bare minimum for me at least.

Maybe the most frustrating thing about this book is Kane himself, who makes the wrong decision just..... so often. I had to take breaks in this book because I was so mad at him not trusting his friends, being irrationally angry at them, trusting the villain even though everything about them screamed villain, and the absolute horrible way that he treats his sister. Literally Sophia walks into all of the magic and instead of explaining to her what the fuck is going on, he ignores her and gives her no agency at all in this story. She was a far more interesting character and I would've loved this story from her point of view, especially because I think her romance with Adeline could've been really sweet! Kane's romance in this book is literally so boring and anticlimatic and I just could not care about it at all. The most likeable characters in this story were Maxine and Helena!!!! I truly just wanted the best for my art cottagecore lesbian grandmas and everything about them was wonderful. Second to them comes Sophia and Adeline who actually had potential for being interesting.

Ursula, Dean, and Elliot were just really boring honestly. Kane really dislikes Adeline for a lot of the book for little reasons that we get to see? Presumably its because Adeline used to make fun of him at school but we really don't see this so again this anger just feels really irrational and annoying.

Kane abandons his friends all the fucking time in this and god it's annoying. Like I cannot believe they want to follow this dude when he literally never puts them first.

Helena's entire Reverie made me want to scream in frustration because the premise is the best one in the entire book! But the way it unfolds is so transcendentally idiotic and it falls apart because Kane for whatever stupid fucking reason just doesn't tell his friends the information they need and fucking watches it fall apart like an idiot instead and just. It made me so angry.

I wish this was a good story but there's so few positives to it and it made me so mad that I genuinely dislike it. Rip
