The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka

More poetry than prose. The story uses a "statistical" writing style. Rather than following a single character, the experiences and perspectives of many characters are presented through phrases like "One of us X. Many of us Y." I love the idea--and I can imagine taking something like the census and literally writing statistical stories based on the data. In practice, unsurprisingly, the style can get repetitive, so it was good that this book covered quite a bit of ground and was brief.
