The Giving Tree
by Shel Silverstein
This is an incredibly moving and powerful book, but for all the wrong reasons. I love Shel Silverstein's books of poetry, and as much as I remember it, I have no problem with "The Missing Piece." But I have no idea why anyone thinks this an appropriate book for children, unless it's to teach them how NOT to behave. The child is selfish and abusive to the tree, and I cry every time I read it because of how awful he is and how such a beautiful relationship went so wrong. One friend of mine said the book made her angry at the tree, for being a maternal figure and being so taken advantage of. I don't take it that far - I'm just angry at the boy.
I also get angry every time I see this book proudly displayed in a bookstore as though it's a great book to give someone. Not in my world.
