Despite being both solid and readable, sadly this book did not deliver as I had hoped it would but ended up a bit ‘meh’ for me. Speculative fiction is usually my jam, and the story sounded interesting but – as mentioned – sadly did not live up to its potential.
Main character, FBI agent Zoey Malone, is described as a bit of a nerdy loner when she is chosen for a mission to find out exactly what has happened to alien abductee Mike Smith. She travels to a remote valley in Nevada to get close to him and succeed where others have failed before her. I, however, found it somewhat difficult to reconcile the descriptions of social misfit Zoey Malone with the character emerging on the page, which, to me at least, had much more flavor from her side career as a writer of spicy romance novels (though title “The Buccaneer’s Butt” sounds more like straight up p*rn).
More attention is given to Zoey’s personal relationship with Mike Smith, which – again, to me – was a bit of a letdown as I initially was attracted to the alien abduction story and was hoping for more of a first contact story as indicated by the blurb. Perhaps the author/publisher might consider changing the blurb a little to let the book find its target audience better? At least, I feel that having actually read the book I do not belong to this target audience as expected.
