A Torch Against the Night is a strong continuation of the series. In some ways, the magic is subtler in Book 2 but Tahir sustains tension throughout the novel with continual, unexpected twists and turns. Characters have depth, and all of the female characters are dynamic and powerful in their own ways, whether their cause is for good or evil. Tahir realistically portrays the brutality of oppression in this gripping read.
