Low, Vol. 2: Before the Dawn Burns Us
by Rick Remender
Story - 3 stars
Art - 1 star
Yeah... The colours and the inking on top of pencils that are rarely more than sketches or breakdowns make this actually physically painful to look at in some passages. I know that I have pretty sensitive eyes, but I'm pretty sure that I'm not the problem here and that it's the choices that the artistic team made throughout most of the series so far. I know quite a few reviews here absolutely love the art in this one, but for me personally it's a huge disappointment because I'd heard so many great things about this series before starting it. Not to say that there aren't some good pages and panels at all, but for the most part the art is a pretty big miss.
The premise and the story itself, however, are still pretty darn interesting, but so far not on its way to becoming an all-time favourite for me. I mean, what the fuck was up with that character taking her armour and top off so that she could fight breasts-akimbo? And the fight itself was so visually garbled anyhow that it made no sense - Where did those grenades come from and how the hell did she manage to pull all of their pins? And the way that fight ended had me flipping back through the pages to see if I'd missed something because it came from pretty far out of nowhere to me.
I'm going to keep going because I usually like Remender a lot and I have hope (see what I did there?) that the story will redeem itself, but as it stands right now, I've got a few unkind words for the friends who recommended this book to me.
